Workplace Communication for Skilled Migrants

Workplace Communication for Skilled Migrants (otherwise known as the Skilled Migrant Programme) is a unique partnership between Victoria University of Wellington, the Rotary Club of Wellington and The Johnson Group Ltd.

Established in 2005 the programme, twice yearly, is an intensive programme which helps participants to develop appropriate communication skills in professional workplaces.

It has been designed for those with a Bachelors Degree or better whose first language is not English. They will typically be unemployed or underemployed. The course is a mix of full-time classroom study, internship and personal mentoring (see RCW job description and the mentoring guidelines).

In 2006 and 2008 the Human Rights Commission recognised the contribution made by the programme to race relations in New Zealand.

In 2009 the programme was submitted as an entry for an Equal Employment Opportunities Trust Award.

The entry was entitled Valuing People - Creating Value and was accompanied by a cost benefit analysis prepared by Dr John Prebble, Professor of Law and former President of the Rotary Club of Wellington. See links below.
