RCW Charitable Trust assists teacher to attend Geography Olympiad

Monday, 30 August 2010

RCW's Charitable Trust made a grant of $500 in July to the New Zealand Board of Geography Teachers so a teacher could travel to Taipei in August to accompany a New Zealand team which was participating on the International Geography Olympiad.

Wellington East Girl's College teacher, Anna Wilson, accompanied the team of four boys from different parts of New Zealand who were selected from a natiopnal competition involving 350 schools.

A Geography Olympiad is a competition where 16 - 19 year old students undertake three different activities.

The first is a written response test where they amswer exam type questions about geographical issues around the world; the second is a field work test which includes observation, mapping, and assessment of what the students have observed and the third is a multi-media test.

The New Zealand team placed 7th overall and came away with a team haul of two Silver Medals and a Bronze Medal.
