Toys 4 Tonga

Thursday, 19 August 2010

Rotary Club of Wellington South are collecting toys (new and used) to ship to Tonga.

The goal is to fill a container with quality new and used toys and school stationary to ship up to Tonga for distribution to needy children by the Rotary Club of Nuku'alofa.

The Rotary Club of Wellington South says "We've done it before, and are confident we can do it even better this time!

It will be an "all-of 'club" project with roles for every member.

We plan to start collecting toys in October, and will run through till the end of January, with the container likely shipped up in March.

The period over Christmas is deliberate, as it will be a good opportunity to gather unwanted Christmas pressies.

We expect to have ten collection points which will be changed month on month, so 40 different locations in total.

We're looking at schools, supermarkets, libraries, and churches, and this time will aim to actively involve the Tongan community in the project.

We will be applying for a Rotary District grant of $1500 which we will need to match by fundraising to help pay for shipping, printing of leaflets and stickers, and collection boxes.

Any cash left over at the end will be used to buy stationary for inclusion in the shipment. Obviously $3000 won't pay all the bills, but we hope to get most services donated, but will be able to pay a token contribution in each case".
